"For we walk by faith, not by sight." In a single short sentence, Paul describes the whole Christian life. We would prefer to walk by sight—to see the outcome, to know the plan, to have the road mapped clearly before we take a single step. But God, in His wisdom, more often gives us a promise instead of a preview, and asks us to trust the One who made it.
Faith is not a leap into the dark. Hebrews defines it precisely: "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is not pretending; it is confidence—confidence anchored not in what we can see, but in the character of a God who cannot lie. When circumstances are uncertain, faith looks past them to the One who is certain.
Consider Abraham. God called him to leave his country and go "unto a land that I will shew thee"—no map, no address, only a promise. Scripture says "he went out, not knowing whither he went." He walked by faith. And that same God who was faithful to Abraham has not changed. The proverb still stands: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."
Notice that trusting God is paired with not leaning on our own understanding. Faith does not mean we stop thinking; it means we stop trusting our fears more than we trust His promises. When our understanding runs out—and it will—His path continues. Paul reminds us to fix our eyes rightly: "we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
Perhaps you are standing at an edge today, unable to see the next step. That is not a sign that God has abandoned you; it is an invitation to walk with Him one step at a time. He rarely shows us the whole staircase. He simply says, "Follow me," and lights the step in front of you.
Reflect: What decision or worry are you trying to "see" your way through? Instead of demanding the whole picture, ask God for the grace to take the next faithful step, trusting Him to direct your path.
