The One Called Alongside

Jesus' name for the Spirit — parakletos — is a courtroom word: one summoned to your side as advocate and helper, and 'another' exactly like Jesus Himself.

"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." John 14:16. Jesus speaks these words on the last night before the cross, to men about to lose the One they had followed for three years. "Comforter" is a tender translation, and it is not wrong — but the Greek word underneath is far richer than a soft pat on the shoulder.

The word is *parakletos*, from *para*, "alongside," and *kaleo*, "to call." A *parakletos* is literally "one called to your side" — and in the ancient world it was, above all, a legal term: the advocate who stands beside the accused in court, the defense counsel who pleads your case. So Jesus is not merely promising a warm feeling. He is promising a Person who takes His place at your side to help, to counsel, to defend, and to plead for you. And there is a second Greek jewel hidden in the sentence: the word "another." Greek has two words for "another" — *heteros*, another of a different kind, and *allos*, another of the very same kind. Jesus chooses *allos*. The Spirit He sends is not a lesser substitute; He is a Helper of exactly the same kind as Jesus Himself.

John underlines this later with the same word. In his first letter he writes, "if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous" (1 John 2:1) — and "advocate" there is that same word, *parakletos*. So the believer has two: Christ pleading for you before the Father in heaven, and the Spirit called alongside you here on earth. You are covered from both directions at once.

This reframes how we pray in weakness. We often imagine we are speaking upward into a distance, hoping to be heard. But the *parakletos* is not far off waiting to be summoned; He has already been given, already called to your side, already taking up residence — "that he may abide with you for ever." You are not facing your accusations, your confusion, or your grief alone in the room. Counsel is already seated beside you.

Reflect: Where do you feel most alone — most like you are pleading your case into an empty room? What changes if you believe the Advocate has already been called to your side, and is not leaving?

Frequently asked questions

What does "another Comforter" mean in John 14:16?

The Greek word is parakletos, meaning "one called alongside" — a helper and, in legal settings, an advocate who pleads your case. Jesus promised not a vague feeling but a Person given to stand at the believer's side.

Why is the Greek word for "another" significant in John 14:16?

Greek has two words for "another": heteros (another of a different kind) and allos (another of the same kind). Jesus uses allos, meaning the Spirit is a Helper of exactly the same kind as Jesus Himself, not a lesser substitute.

How is the Holy Spirit our advocate?

The same word, parakletos, is used of Jesus in 1 John 2:1 as our "advocate with the Father." So the believer has two: Christ pleading in heaven and the Spirit called alongside on earth, given to abide with us forever.
